WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Trent Kelly (R-MS) along with Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) introduced House Resolution 599, Expressing Support of Independence and Further Development of the Strategic Partnership Between the United States and Uzbekistan. This legislation seeks to strengthen existing relations between Uzbekistan and the United States. Congressman Kelly is the founding member of the Uzbek Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. One of the central goals of the Caucus is to bring attention to the growing relationship between the United States and Uzbekistan. Prior to his election, Congressman Kelly worked closely with the Uzbek military as a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard. Since 2012, Uzbekistan has been a partner nation to the Mississippi Army National Guard through the Department of Defense's State Partnership Program. Congressman Kelly's membership on the House Committee on Agriculture has also been critical to growing the partnership at an economic level. Elected leaders, the Mississippi Development Authority, as well as our research universities, have played key roles by encouraging foreign investment and collaboration on agricultural research in recent years. "My time as District Attorney and multiple deployments to Iraq solidified my belief that the key to building trust is through long-term, personal relationships. I am grateful for the military, economic, and personal relationships that Mississippi has built over the years with the Uzbek people. I support Uzbekistan's transition to a more democratic government. I look forward to contributing to the United States' strategic partnership with Uzbekistan." Congressman Trent Kelly represents Mississippi's First Congressional District. He serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel of the House Armed Services Committee. Congressman Kelly also serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Small Business. This is his third term. ### |
