THORNBERRY, KELLY APPLAUD MILITARY FAMILY READINESS MEASURES IN NDAA

WASHINGTON- Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee and Rep. Trent Kelly (R-MS) ranking member of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel today applauded the inclusion of much of their Military Family Readiness Act in the Military Personnel Subcommittee’s portion of the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act.

Thornberry and Kelly introduced their bill in April, focusing on steps the Pentagon should take to better support military families. These included better communication with military families, improved access to childcare, health care improvements, and improvements to the Exceptional Family Member Program. Nearly all of their proposals are included in the Military Personnel legislation released today. Read more about the Thornberry / Kelly proposal here. A summary of the Military Personnel bill can be found here.

Rep. Thornberry said, “Family readiness is directly tied to overall military readiness. Including these ideas in this year’s draft of the NDAA is important. As Members of Congress we have a long history of putting partisan differences aside to support our troops and their families. I want to thank Rep. Kelly and Rep. Jackie Speier, the Chairwoman of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, for their work to move these provisions forward."

Rep. Kelly said, "Our men and women in uniform have made a steadfast commitment to protect our freedoms. As members of the House Armed Services Committee, it is our duty to make sure their needs are met at home and across the world. The provisions included in the Military Personnel Subcommittee’s portion of the FY 2021 NDAA will deliver much-needed support to our military families. It has been an honor to work with Rep. Speier on this important legislation that will improve the quality of life for our Service Members and their families."
