Dear Friend,
Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released data that shows the U.S. economy shrank 0.9% in the second quarter of 2022. Under the Biden Administration, Mississippians and all Americans are forced to pay more for everything from gas to groceries. The national average for a gallon of gas is $4.33 - nearly $2.00 more than when President Biden took office. While Americans suffer, Democrats have repeatedly prevented consideration of the Republican-backed American Energy Independence from Russia Act (H.R. 6858). Despite opposition, my colleagues and I will continue to fight for commonsense, pro-growth policies that will bring relief to hardworking Americans and their families.

Mississippi's aerospace and defense industries play an important role in America's national defense capabilities. In the First District and across the state, they provide excellent jobs to our citizens, improving their quality of life. Stark Aerospace, a Columbus-based defense and aerospace firm, manufactures a diversified portfolio of advanced and technologically sophisticated systems and components. From its 136,000 sq. ft. facility near the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, Stark Aerospace's current work includes missile systems, electro-optics and infrared (EO/IR) systems, electronic systems assembly, repair and overhaul, and UAV and commercial composite aerostructures. Stark's customers comprise a variety of aerospace and defense companies including direct contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
David Alabed, Stark Aerospace CEO, commented, “For the past 15 years, we proudly call Mississippi home and remain enthusiastic about the services, components, and systems we produce. Our objective is to grow our workforce and provide many more years of lasting growth for Stark, the GTR region, and Mississippi.”
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am proud of Mississippi's aerospace and defense industries and will continue to advocate on their behalf.

I am pleased to announce that our office is participating in the Congressional App Challenge (CAC). Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives hosts the Congressional App Challenge. This is an annual coding competition designed to encourage middle school and high school student participation in computer science and coding, regardless of experience. It is an opportunity for students to compete against other peers within their district by creating an original application in a variety of programming languages and on different platforms. Students' winning apps will be eligible to be displayed in the United States Capitol Building and featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website, House.gov. Student winners will be invited to attend the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington, D.C.
The deadline for students to register and submit their app online is November 1st. Applicants can register for the competition and submit their apps on the Congressional App Challenge Website.
If you need assistance, please call Melinda Whited at (662) 687-1525 or send an email to Melinda.Whited@mail.house.gov
