Last week, the family of Private First Class (PFC) Jimmy Rowland gathered for the funeral of this Mississippi Hero in Baldwyn. It was an honor to participate in the service to recognize the service and sacrifice of PFC Rowland. He was one of thirteen children raised by Bob and Josephine Frances Heavner Rowland.
On December 15, 1948, PFC Rowland enlisted in the U.S. Army. In July 1950, while serving in the Korean War, PFC Rowland was reported Missing in Action. In 1951, four sets of remains were recovered, but only three could be identified. For so many years, the family waited for any news of his whereabouts. After 71 years not knowing what happened to their long-lost relative, PFC Rowland's remains were identified using DNA technology.
PFC Rowland's family was presented with medals that he earned and deserved, including the Purple Heart. PFC Rowland's service and sacrifice will always be remembered. To watch an excerpt of a story that aired on WCBI TV, please click on the link. (Photo courtesy: Jason Collum/The Baldwyn News)
