Dear Friend,

Today marks the fourteenth anniversary of September 11th. Let us remember the thousands of Americans who lost their lives and the heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty to help their fellow Americans. This date also serves as a reminder that there are people and groups that want to do America harm. National security was the main topic in Congress this week as we discussed and debated the administration’s nuclear agreement with Iran.

This week the House was focused on stopping the Iran nuclear deal brokered by the administration and five other nations. Based on my review of the agreement, combined with my personal experience of being deployed with the Army National Guard to Iraq and seeing firsthand the Iranian influence there, I have no reason to believe Iran will act in good faith. These are not just concerns I have regarding the deal, but concerns I consistently heard from constituents, regardless of party affiliation, during the August work period. Recently, I emailed constituents highlighting my opposition to the negotiated agreement with Iran, and 89% of respondents opposed the deal as well.

ACTIONS IN CONGRESS

The House voted on three pieces of legislation:

  • H.R. 3460, which would prevent the president from lifting sanctions on Iran.
  • H. Res. 411, that finds the president failed to comply with the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act.
  • H.R. 3461, which would approve the nuclear deal in its current form.

I voted in support of H.R. 3460 because I am opposed to lifting economic sanctions on Iran. If sanctions are lifted, Iran will have access to billions of dollars to finance terrorist activities in the region and get closer to building a nuclear weapon.

I also supported H.Res. 411 because the president failed to provide Congress with the entire agreement as defined by the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act. Congress learned that the agreement contains at least two secret side agreements involving the inspection of Iranian military complexes. These side agreements have not been submitted to Congress. Simply stated, Members of Congress should not be asked to approve an agreement of such significance to our national security, without being able to read all documents involved.

I voted in opposition to H.R. 3461 because I unequivocally reject the Iran nuclear agreement. This agreement has dangerous implications to our national and global security interests. My primary role in Congress is to keep the American people safe, and this agreement is not in the best interest of our national security.
