June 30, 2023Dear Friend,June 24th marked the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. I was proud to join my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives who signed the resolution in support of this historic case which said, "The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion and that Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives." Millions of lives will be saved as a result of the ruling in Dobbs. We must remain committed to protecting the unalienable right to life, supporting families, including new and expectant mothers and their children.

national defense authorization act (ndaa) fiscal year 2024

This month, the House Armed Services Committee passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024. Prior to the passage of this bipartisan legislation, the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, for which I serve as Chairman, held a markup for H.R. 2670. I am confident this year's bill will make real progress to achieve a focused, prioritized, and strong defense budget. To watch an excerpt from the subcommittee hearing, please click on the link

mississippi's sweet potato industry

Mississippi's First Congressional District is home to the majority of sweet potato farms in our state. I am sure that you have heard that Vardaman is the "Sweet Potato Capital of the World!" Our sweet potato producers have just completed planting. Our Team Kelly members, Semaj Redd and Adam Grubbs, traveled to Topashaw Farms to learn more about their operation and to listen to their thoughts and concerns. Additionally, they toured the Mississippi State Extension Service Research Center in Pontotoc. Many sweet potato farmers are concerned about the Department of Labor's burdensome rules, which impact their labor force of mostly migrant workers. Additionally, inflation and input costs such as fertilizer and diesel fuel are creating hardships for our producers. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, I will continue to advocate on behalf of our producers and push for common-sense legislation that will provide them with the support they need to be successful
