Dear Friend,

For years, Medicaid has been strained by waste, fraud, and abuse. The One Big, Beautiful Bill strengthens this vital program and ensures it serves the people it was always intended to help
—pregnant women, children, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families.

The bill removes ineligible enrollees, enforces commonsense work, training, and education requirements, and ends duplicate enrollment across states. These reforms preserve Medicaid as a safety net for the most vulnerable while protecting it for future generations.

I was proud to stand with President Donald Trump and my fellow House Republicans to support this legislation and protect Medicaid for those who truly need it.

u.s. secretary of education visits oxford

Recently, I had the honor of visiting Oxford Early Childhood Center alongside local and state leaders and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. Secretary McMahon is leading President Donald Trump's executive order to dismantle the Department of Education as part of her Returning Education to the States Tour. She will visit all 50 states to hear directly from students, teachers, and school leaders about innovative models that accelerate learning.

new albany first responders dinner

I recently had the honor of speaking at a dinner recognizing Union County's first responders and thanking them for their courage and sacrifice. These men and women are the heartbeat of our communities - protecting families, saving lives, and keeping our towns safe through law enforcement, fire services, EMS, power restoration, and highway safety.

In Washington, I remain committed to supporting first responders by working with my House Republican colleagues to pass legislation that strengthens resources and ensures they have the tools they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Mississippi is stronger because of our first responders and the families who stand beside them. I am grateful for their service, their sacrifice, and their unwavering compassion for helping others.

nemcc northrop grumman aerospace lab

Recently, Team Kelly attended the ribbon cutting for Northrop Grumman's new Aerospace Lab at Northeast Mississippi Community College. Northrop Grumman, a leading aerospace and defense manufacturer that proudly supports our military, continues to invest in Mississippi. The company employs about 800 Mississippians, and this new facility will create additional opportunities while strengthening our economy.

The Aerospace Lab will serve as a training center where students gain hands-on experience and technical knowledge tailored to the needs of today's aerospace and defense careers. Workforce development is critical and ensuring students have the skills to succeed in high-demand industries benefits both our economy and our communities. With the support of NEMCC, AccelerateMS, Northrop Grumman officials, and Gov. Tate Reeves, this project highlights a strong commitment to preparing the next generation of skilled workers. I am grateful to see Northrop Grumman deepen its investment in Mississippi's First District and our people.

honoring chief warrant officer derek abbott

The Itawamba County Board of Supervisors recently approved a request from Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Bryan Simmons to rename the American Legion Building as the Derek J. Abbott Veterans Memorial Building. The designation honors Chief Warrant Officer Derek Abbott, who was killed in February 2024 during a routine flight when the aircraft crashed in Prentiss County. Chief Warrant Officer Bryan Zemek also lost his life in the crash.

The renaming serves not only as a tribute to Abbott but also as a memorial to veterans who died in non-combat incidents while serving their country.

Chandler Wood, who serves in my office as a recipient of the Sergeant First Class Sean Cooley and Specialist Christopher Horton Congressional Gold Star Family Fellowship, is the Gold Star child of Chief Warrant Officer Abbott. We are deeply grateful to the Itawamba County Board of Supervisors and Commander Simmons for honoring a true American hero who wore the uniform and served with distinction.

team kelly interns

We're proud to highlight our summer interns who have made a meaningful impact on Team Kelly in Washington, D.C.

Bailey Carpenter, a recent graduate of Mississippi State University in Agricultural Economics, will soon pursue her master's degree in the same field. She hopes to return to Capitol Hill to build a career in agricultural policy and legislation. This summer, Bailey has gained valuable experience in agricultural policy, attended committee hearings, and led Capitol tours.

Celie Rayburn, an Oxford native and rising senior at the University of Mississippi, is studying Public Policy Leadership and Spanish. She plans to attend law school after graduation and has appreciated the chance to see the legislative process in action.

Kate Sanders, a Columbus native and rising senior at the University of Mississippi, is majoring in Marketing. Her time in Washington has included attending committee briefings, leading tours of the Capitol, and developing a stronger understanding of Congress.

Molly Cat Tannehill, from Oxford, is a rising senior at Mississippi State University, double majoring in Communications and Political Science. She has enjoyed working alongside her fellow interns, contributing to research for the NDAA, and experiencing the daily operations of Congress.

We are grateful for the enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work each of our interns bring to the office every day.

My office offers internships for college students each semester and during the summer. This is an amazing opportunity for students. Interns will work with staff members to learn the legislative process, assist with daily tasks, attend training, perform administrative duties, and aid in constituent services in an educational capacity.

If you would like to apply for an internship through my office, please complete our online application. For more information, please visit trentkelly.house.gov or contact our intern coordinator at ctkinternships@mail.house.gov.

service academy nominations

As your First District Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, one of the greatest honors I have is nominating exceptional young men and women to our nation's prestigious service academies. These institutions - including West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy - develop future military leaders through rigorous academic and physical training, preparing them to serve our country with honor and distinction.

Those who are appointed to a service academy commit to at least five years of active-duty service following graduation. This is not only a significant responsibility but a tremendous opportunity to lead and serve our nation. I'm continually inspired by the dedication, discipline, and character of the students from Mississippi who choose to pursue this path of service.

For more information on service academy nominations, please contact Melinda Whited at melinda.whited@mail.house.gov or (662) 687-1525.
