Dear Friend,

On March 20, 2022, America recognized National Vietnam War Veterans Day. In towns and cities across Mississippi's First Congressional District and well beyond, members of the community gathered to honor heroes. These men and women left the only world they knew, traveled to distant lands, and courageously fought to defend the freedoms we all enjoy. We will remain forever thankful for their service and for all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. America is the greatest nation on Earth because of their bravery.

Inflation is causing financial hardships for Mississippians and scores of our fellow Americans. President Biden's Fiscal Year 2023 Budget will only make matters worse for the American people. Recently, members of the House Budget Committee listened to testimony and asked Office of Budget and Management Director Shalanda Young questions. Harold was raised in Okolona as the oldest of seven children. He was drafted into the U.S. Army following his junior year at Egypt High School. He entered the service in November 1942, serving in numerous battles from the beaches of Normandy to Luxembourg, Germany. During his service, Harold was a cook and a baker - a duty assignment that gave him great satisfaction. Harold said he enjoyed serving comfort food to his fellow soldiers. 

When the war was over, Harold returned to Okolona to open a hardware business with the money he had saved. In 1950, he married Lois - a union that would last 72 years until she passed away on July 22, 2021. Harold's daughter Harolyn operates the floral shop her mother opened in 1987. Harold worked in the shop until he turned 97! 

Harold credits the Lord, love, and support of his family and friends for helping him lead a fulfilling and happy life. We wish him continued health and happiness.

Congratulations to Mary Murphy! The Lewisburg High School senior has received an appointment to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was an honor to nominate this outstanding young person who wants to serve our great Nation as a fighter pilot. Mary has distinguished herself in academics, athletics, and service to her fellow students. "I'm very excited," Mary said. "I was shocked when I received a phone call about my appointment. I am looking forward to studying aeronautical engineering and serving my country."
