Agriculture is Mississippi's top industry ($8.83 billion), employing 17.4 percent of the workforce, and includes more than 34,000 farms. In the good and lean times, farmers are resilient - always striving to help feed and clothe our great Nation.
As with any other field, Mississippi's ag industry adapts to remain competitive with other states and nations. Success begins with good leadership and a plan for the future. Recently, I appreciated the opportunity to meet with approximately three hundred farmers from across Mississippi, including some from the First District at the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation's Young Farmers and Ranchers Leadership Conference in Memphis. The majority of these men and women are carrying on a family tradition. Others may be launching a career in agriculture. All need our support in Congress and they will get it on my watch.
Broadband is an essential tool that farmers must have to produce the best quality commodities, using advanced machinery. Connectivity is more important than ever. Progress continues to be made to bring more homes, schools, and businesses into the 21st century.
As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, I will continue to work with my colleagues to advance meaningful policies that will help our farmers and ranchers to succeed. Progress is being made to forward the next Farm Bill. I will provide updates on our progress in future newsletters and on social media.
