Dear Friend,
It is important that we, as Members of Congress, get back to our work in Washington, D.C. Most of the business of the people has been conducted by virtual hearings, meetings, and via conference calls, but that is not the same. We should be able to debate the issues on the House floor which is essential to proper representation of our constituents. Last week, I attended a House Armed Services Committee hearing in person.
It is my earnest desire that all of my colleagues return to Washington, D.C., where we can safely conduct our duties and continue to address the most pressing needs of America, including COVID-19. The hearing titled, "Department of Defense COVID-19 Response to Defense Industrial Base Challenges," was held to hear testimony from the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Ellen Lord. The hearing focused on the response to meet the DOD's readiness needs. To watch an excerpt from the hearing, Please click on the link.
first congressional district art contest - a meeting with our winner! |
We have so many talented young people across the First District. That is one reason I enjoy being able to highlight the great artwork that is submitted to our annual First Congressional District Art Competition. This year, James Dukes, a Booneville High School 9th grade student, was selected to be our 1st place winner! James, the son of Dr. Erik and Erin Dukes, began to show promise with his artwork before he started school, drawing images of dinosaurs and sharks. His entry titled, "Summertime" truly captured the essence of all the great foods we enjoy this time of year. It will be displayed with other winners from across America in the U.S. Capitol building. Congratulations, James!
And there's more! Announcing our 2nd - 6th place winners:
2nd - Brittany Sanders, Tishomingo County High School
3rd - Jackson McCoy, Booneville High School
4th - Kristin Jernigan, Louisville High School
5th - Meg Howell, Booneville High School
6th - Makayla Bell, Booneville High School
I am thankful for all those who entered this year's contest. Please visit trentkelly.house.gov to learn more about the First Congressional District Art Contest and prepare to enter next year's contest.

mask making - a family operation |
We continue to see people across the First District use their talents to take care of their fellow Mississippians. Members of the Jackson and Fields families in Shannon have been making masks since the need for them became apparent.

Family members have been gathering to make hundreds of masks that have been distributed to law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency responders in Mississippi and to a number of states. At first, these volunteers bought fabric to make masks, but the word quickly spread and donations of fabric began to arrive. I am thankful for all those who are giving of themselves during this time in our Nation.

how can we assist you? |
It is my pleasure to introduce you to Staff Assistant Anna May, our newest addition to Team Kelly in Washington, D.C.! Anna, a native of Collierville, Tennessee, graduated from Mississippi State University. The English and Political Science major will be assisting our constituents in a variety of ways.
Part of her duties include providing guidance to our interns. When Congress goes back in session, Anna will be the first person our guests meet when they visit our DC office. Until then, she is available to seek answers to any questions you may have and to set up future U.S. Capitol tours as they become available. To reach Anna, please give our office a call at (202) 225-4306 or send her an email Anna.May@mail.house.gov
