February 22, 2020

Dear Friend,

On February 19, our Nation recognized the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Thousands of courageous Americans lost their lives during this fierce campaign in the Pacific Ocean. Earl Brown, an Itawamba County native, was a U.S. Navy Sailor during World War II. He served most of his three years on active duty aboard a ship that protected troopships. His memories of the Battle of Iwo Jima are clear and intact. When asked, Mr. Brown is always willing to share his compelling stories about fighting for America in the Pacific which also included battles in Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa.

Let us all remember those who have bravely fought for the freedoms we hold dear. When you see these great patriots, please offer them the hand of friendship and thank them for their service. If you would like to nominate a Veteran to be featured in my newsletter, please contact a member of our team. We would be honored to tell their story.

military ACademy appointment

As your Representative, it is my privilege to nominate young people who wish to attend one of America's military academies. Every year, I host Academy Day which is where the journey often begins for First District middle and high school students. This event is an opportunity for them to meet face-to-face with Service Academy and ROTC representatives who are eager to offer guidance about the nomination process and to share their own success stories.

Bob Leake, a Tupelo High School senior, is among the hundreds of students who have participated in Academy Day. I am pleased to announce his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy! Bob, the son of Lindsey and Tracy Leake, plans to major in aerospace engineering. His goal is to become a U.S. Navy aviator. Bob will be the first member of his family to attend a Service Academy! "I started thinking about serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy when I was in the tenth grade," Bob said. "Rep. Kelly's Academy Day really helped me formulate a plan of action to achieve this appointment."

2020 Congressional Art Competition

I am pleased to announce the dates for the 2020 First Congressional District Art Competition! Submissions will be accepted until April 15, 2020, and the reception will be held at Blue Mountain College on April 23, 2020. This is a great opportunity for art teachers and school districts to showcase the many talented students throughout the First District.

Last year, Skylar Sloan from Saltillo won first place. Her artwork is on display at the U.S. Capitol along with all of the other first place winners from every Congressional District in the country. For more information about the competition, please click on the link.

flag requests

If you would like to commemorate a special occasion, our team is ready to assist you in purchasing a U.S. flag to be flown over the U.S. Capitol building. Flags come with a certificate detailing the day the flag was flown. You can dedicate the flag to a special person or occasion. We offer this service at TrentKelly.house.gov or by simply giving us a call

Plan ahead! Flag requests need to be submitted at least four weeks prior to the date when you would like to have the flag flown. To send a flag request in the mail, write to: Congressman Trent Kelly, 1005 Longworth House Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515.
