Dear Friend,

It is the duty of Congress to set aside partisan politics and do what Americans expect of us.  Rather than address the issues that impact the daily lives of our citizens, Democrats are determined to pursue a politically motivated agenda based on unfounded claims against our Commander-in-Chief.  Under President Trump's leadership, the economy is soaring to record highs.  More people are working than we have seen in 50 years.  We should be working on the issues important to Americans, but politics is hindering progress.   Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss my concerns on The Gallo Radio Show on SuperTalk Mississippi.  To listen to the interview, please click on the link.

ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE

Expressing Support of Independence and Further Development of the Strategic Partnership Between the United States and Uzbekistan

On September first, the Republic of Uzbekistan celebrated their 28th Independence Day.  Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) and I recognized this milestone by introducing H.R. 599, Expressing Support of Independence and Further Development of the Strategic Partnership Between the United States and Uzbekistan.  Through this legislation, it is our goal to strengthen the relationship between our countries.  As the founding member of the Caucus on Uzbekistan in the U.S. House of Representatives, I am committed to working with this sovereign nation.  To learn more about this initiative, please click on the link.  To read a full text of the bill, click HERE.

Order Dustlik (Friendship) award

It was humbling to be selected for the Order Dustlik (Friendship) by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.  Recently, I was honored to be presented with the award at the Celebration of the 28th Anniversary of National Independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan.  To read more about this great honor, please click on the link

manufacturing day

Today, our nation recognizes Manufacturing Day.  We are thankful for all the companies that have invested in our state and employ Mississippians, giving them the opportunity to grow professionally and provide for their families.  As the economy flourishes, our workforce must expand to meet the growing needs of the local industries.  The Imagine the Possibilities Career Expo is helping our state achieve this goal.

This week, more than 7,000 eighth-grade students from 17 northeast Mississippi counties in the CREATE Foundation service area attended this annual event in Tupelo at the BancorpSouth Arena.  The Expo introduced young people to 18 career pathways, including manufacturing, health science, aerospace, transportation, agriculture, engineering, hospitality, and tourism.  Students were able to talk with people about their professions and learn about the job opportunities available to them in Mississippi.

committee action

As an outdoor enthusiast, I am proud of the wide variety of recreational activities that are available in our national forests in Mississippi and across America.  It is vital that we do everything in our power to keep our national forests open and accessible to the public.  A disturbing trend is happening throughout our national forests - aging infrastructure.  $5.2 billion in deferred maintenance is making matters worse.

Last week, the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry, of which I am a member, held a hearing titled, "The National Forest System: Restoring our Forest Infrastructure."  We listened to testimony and discussed this situation with Lenise Lago, Associate Chief, USDA Forest Service.  To watch an excerpt of the hearing, please click on the link.
