Dear Friend,

Last month, it was an honor to lead a bipartisan delegation to the Middle East.  Members served Thanksgiving Day lunch to service men and women who are stationed at Camp Buehring, Kuwait.  This summer, more than 4,000 members of the Mississippi Army National Guard were deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield.  We let them know that we are proud of their service and understand the sacrifices they and their families have made to protect our nation.

Representatives Ron Estes (KS-4), Roger Marshall (KS-1), Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15), Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon (PR), and I traveled to Uzbekistan, Djibouti, and Kuwait.  Our mission was to meet with embassy officials and with national defense leaders in order to understand the current posture and readiness of U.S. forces.  It was equally important to make sure our troops on the ground have the support they need to carry out their missions successfully.

We also visited with service members from the Texas National Guard, Task Force Alamo (1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment) who are serving our nation at Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti.  To watch the video, please click on the link.

president Donald j. trump visits tupelo

Last week, President Donald Trump traveled to Tupelo where he was greeted by thousands of Mississippians at the Tupelo Regional Airport.  He shared with all those in attendance the great things happening in Mississippi and across America, including a booming economy and historic lows in the unemployment rate.  The last time a sitting president visited Tupelo was in 1934.  President Franklin Delano Roosevelt came to celebrate Tupelo becoming the first city to receive electricity through the Tennessee Valley Authority, a public utility.

workforce development in Desoto county

In the First District and across Mississippi, an effort is well underway to build a workforce that will meet the specific needs of our job creators.  Our community colleges play a critical role meeting the demand to support skilled trades education, including Delta Technical College.

Recently, Delta Tech broke ground on a 50,000-square-foot facility at their Horn Lake campus in DeSoto County.  The facility will be used for hands-on training programs including welding, HVAC, electrician, cosmetology, as well as medical and dental assisting.  It is exciting to see more opportunities which will enhance the quality life for families and, at the same time, meet the needs of our employers.
