Dear Friend,

This week, we lost a brave Mississippi Army National Guard soldier who died in an accident during  training operations at the National Training Center (NTC) at Ft. Irwin, California. Sergeant (SGT) Kyle Clayton Thomas, an Amory native, was killed in a rollover incident. Three other soldiers were injured, but thankfully, they have been treated and released from the hospital.

Not enough can be said about the brave men and women who place their lives on the line every day to defend our nation. Last week, my colleagues and I were at Ft. Irwin to discuss our defense readiness capabilities with NTC Commander Brigadier General (BG) Jeff Broadwater and to observe tactical operations carried out by the Mississippi Army National Guard. While I did not get to meet SGT Thomas, I met soldiers on the ground like him who are dedicated to defending this great nation. It is always difficult and heartbreaking to lose one of our own. My thoughts and prayers have been with SGT Thomas' family and his fellow soldiers this week while serving on Guard duty in Mississippi.

memorial day in the first district

This week, we honored all the service men and women who have fallen in defense of our great nation. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who fought and died to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. Throughout the First District, our staff members attended ceremonies.

I was humbled to share my thoughts on the meaning of Memorial Day while in Ft. Irwin, California. Please watch the video below.

listening to our constituents

Agriculture is the number one industry in our state. Farmers in the First District and throughout Mississippi work hard to feed and clothe our nation. Through my role on the House Committee on Agriculture, it has and will continue to be a top priority to support them.

That effort begins by listening to their concerns which is what we did this week in Vardaman at the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation Ag Policy Roundtable. We will continue to discuss issues that have an impact on farmers as we make progress with our work on the 2018 Farm Bill.
