January 6, 2017
Dear Friend,
This week, we returned to Washington, D.C. for the swearing in ceremony of the 115th Congress. It is humbling to represent the interests of Mississippi.
Mississippi Business Journal Business Person of the Year - Joe Max Higgins
Leadership is about vision and making tough decisions. When you are willing to share in the hardships and the risks, people will respect you. Joe Max Higgins is someone who shares that philosophy. He has demonstrated these qualities while serving as the Golden Triangle Development LINK Chief Executive Officer.
He was recently named the Mississippi Business Journal Business Person of the Year. He has earned this honor. Joe Max came to the Golden Triangle, which is made up of Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay Counties, during a time when thousands of north Mississippians were without a job and there were few opportunities. His strategy to bring in new manufacturers was to offer sites that would have the infrastructure in place to quickly build a facility and enable them to achieve their production goals. Federal, state and local leaders offered their support which was essential to attract new industry and create programs designed to train workers to meet specific industry needs. Joe Max's industrial recruitment philosophy has placed him in the national spotlight. Joe Max was recently featured on the 60 Minutes program.
Their industrial recruitment philosophy has helped the Golden Triangle Development LINK recruit a number of industries including Steel Dynamics, Inc., Airbus Helicopters, Aurora Flight Sciences, Stark Aerospace, PACCAR Engine Company and Yokohama Tire.
Congratulations to Joe Max on being named the Mississippi Business Journal Business Person of the Year.

The Midnight Rules Relief Act of 2017
In the final days of an administration, last minute rules and regulations are often finalized. The policies advocated by the current administration are burdensome, costly and politically motivated, making the federal government even more difficult to navigate. In an effort to stop this practice, the House passed, and I supported, H.R. 21, the Midnight Rules Relief Act of 2017. This legislation gives Congress the authority to quickly undo abusive and unnecessary midnight rules.
The Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act of 2017
We need fewer regulations, not more. Overregulation is frustrating to all of us trying to make a living to support our families. If new regulations are needed, they need to be efficient and effective. Mississippians suffer along with the rest of the country when rules are forced on them by unelected bureaucrats who hand down regulations with little or no scrutiny. The House passed, and I cosponsored, H.R. 26, the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act of 2017. This legislation requires agencies to submit major regulations with an economic impact of more than $100 million to Congress for approval. It also gives Congress the authority to quickly vote on major rules before they can be implemented.

Adam Grubbs
Communicating with our constituents in the First District is a top priority for our team. We want to know what is important to you. That effort begins by keeping close contact with you. Our field representatives live throughout the district. You can count on them to listen to your concerns and to work hard to find a solution to concerns you may have.
Adam Grubbs is one of three field representatives who lives in the southern portion of the First District. Like our other team members, he is committed to developing and maintaining relationships in Lowndes, Clay, Monroe, Winston and Oktibbeha County. Adam is eager to serve his fellow Mississippians. "I want to be a friend to people," Adam said. "The best way to make new friends is to be accessible." Adam, a Saltillo native, served as an intern in our Washington, D.C. office this summer.
Please let us know how we can help. Our team is ready to assist you.

Mississippi gold star families memorial groundbreaking ceremony
|
Military service is a tradition for many Mississippi families. They have fought to protect our freedoms and to keep America safe. Mississippi Gold Star Families are those who have experienced the loss of a loved one who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces. A memorial groundbreaking ceremony will be held to dedicate a monument in their honor. The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument was created by the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation founder and Medal of Honor recipient, Hershel "Woody" Williams. The monument is a symbol of courage.
Memorial ceremonies will be held in a number of counties including the First District. The first groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg January 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the general assembly area of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum.
