Dear Friend,

We are so fortunate in our great nation to have men and women who devote their lives to protecting the freedoms we all enjoy. There have been too many who gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting to keep us safe. Army First Lieutenant Donald C. Carwile is one of them.

In September, the House passed H.R. 5309, which honors the memory of First Lieutenant Carwile who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2008 by naming the Oxford post office in his memory. With the support of Senator Thad Cochran and Senator Roger Wicker, the Senate also passed the bill and it is now headed to the president's desk to be signed into law.

"I'm really proud. It's an honor for me and my wife Judy," 1LT Carwile's dad Dennis Carwile said. "He's always going to be our hero. I can't be more pleased that this has happened. I can't thank everybody enough that has worked to get this done."

Donnie, as he was called by family and friends, grew up in Lafayette County. When he graduated from Lafayette High School, he joined the Army. He would also serve as a patrol officer for the Batesville and Oxford Police Departments. In 2006, he returned to military service and qualified for Officer Candidate School where he was commissioned as an infantry officer. Two years later, Army First Lieutenant Carwile was killed on a combat mission in Afghanistan while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. He is survived by his wife Jennifer and daughters Elizabeth Reese and Avery Claire.

This highly-decorated and distinguished soldier gave his life for our great nation. He earned this honor.

the communiversity

Hard-working Mississippians know the value of having a good job. We are committed to providing for our families and will do what it takes to make sure they are cared for. These qualities continue to capture the attention of manufacturers who come to our great state ready to invest in our workforce.

The Golden Triangle is an area where we continue to see a huge emphasis on giving industry what they need to make a solid return on their investment. In 1999, the state's first Center for Manufacturing Technology Excellence (CMTE) opened for training on the campus of East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew. Federal, state and local leaders joined forces to create programs designed to train workers to meet industry specific training needs. This workforce development philosophy attracted companies like Steel Dynamics, Inc., Airbus Helicopters, Aurora Flight Sciences, Stark Aerospace, PACCAR Engine Company and Yokohama Tire among others.

Through the leadership of Senator Cochran and collaboration with federal, state and local officials, that effort is now being taken to the next level with the Golden Triangle's workforce development project called The Communiversity. Construction is underway. The 145,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility will have high bay learning areas, a manufacturing display venue, classrooms, laboratories, and incubator bays for new start-ups. Classrooms will be equipped with the latest in A/V technology. The additional space will allow EMCC to expand their workforce training programs and enrollment. That will enable them to provide a continuous stream of technically competent team members who can meet the needs of the most technically advanced manufacturers in the world.

The Communiversity is set for completion in 2018. It will be exciting to see the impact it will have on the region and our great state of Mississippi.

Sheila Ryan

Our constituents are a top priority for our team. We are always eager to see you and to make sure your needs are being met. Shelia Ryan is the first person most people will see when they come to our Tupelo District Office. She welcomes our visitors and places them in the right hands.

Shelia's responsibilities also include helping to navigate the bureaucracy of a federal agency. She helps to simplify the process by acting as a liaison between those who need help and the agencies they are working with. She and other team members work to provide help with a number of federal agencies including the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, Medicare and Medicaid.

Shelia, a Prentiss County native, understands the needs that are out there and works hard every day to try to find a solution to a problem. "It makes you feel good when it works out," Shelia said. "It's all about helping others."
