September 2, 2016 Dear Friend, I understand that our responsibility to those who served does not end when a deployment is over or when a war ends. The men and women who serve our country deserve the best care. So many have put their lives on the line during times of war. Veterans need to know what services are available to them. When veterans reach out to my office, Veterans Services Coordinator Mike Patterson will be their guide. He understands their needs. Mike is a veteran as well, having served 22 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard. Come see or give Mike a call in our Tupelo office. He works closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Veterans Services Officers (VSOs) in counties throughout our district. My concern for veterans and their well-being led me to Jackson this week. I had the opportunity to tour the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. The department-wide scandal at the VA two years ago brought much-needed attention to the substandard medical care our veterans were receiving. While improvements at the medical center are being made and are a step in the right direction, it's going to take a continued concentrated effort to connect veterans with the services they need and the benefits they deserve. I continue to closely monitor the effort to serve our veterans and will to look for ways to give them support and improve the care they have earned and deserve.
