Dear Friend,
One of the most valuable assets in the First District and throughout Mississippi is our workforce. Every day, hardworking Mississippians demonstrate an outstanding commitment to excellence through the products they manufacture.

Recently, Governor Phil Bryant signed a proclamation designating October 2-6 as Mississippi Manufacturing Week. We celebrated our state's strong and successful partnership with manufacturers who invest millions in our state and employ thousands of Mississippians.
Whether they are corporate-owned or independently-owned, Mississippi's manufacturers continue to set the standard for world quality backed by a workforce that is second to none.

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
Last week, the House of Representatives worked to further protect life by passing, H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which seeks to protect the well-being of the mother and unborn child by prohibiting physicians from performing an abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy. Violators of this bill could face a fine, up to five years in prison, or both. However, exceptions are provided within this bill in cases of rape, incest, or an imminent danger to the life of the mother. This legislation passed the House of Representatives on October 3rd with a vote of 237-189. As your voice in Congress, I believe it is our duty as a nation to protect the lives of the unborn. I was proud to be a cosponsor and vote in support of this legislation.
Building a Better America Budget
The FY18 budget, also known as the "Building a Better America" budget, promotes pro-growth polices, secures our borders, supports a strong national defense, and moves our nation forward through tax reform. The House Budget Committee has worked diligently to formulate a budget that will get America on a sustainable fiscal path and a balanced fiscal budget within the next 10 years. The House passed, with my support, with a vote of 231-189, H.Con. Res. 71, the Fiscal Year 2018 House Budget Concurrent Resolution. This legislation produces a $9 billion surplus in FY2027, while aiming to reduce government-wide improper payments by $700 billion. I want to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and efficiently. Households across the country must live within a realistic budget and they should expect the federal government to do the same. I applaud the House Budget Committee's attentiveness to fund vital programs that protect our national security, maintain our ability to feed, and defend ourselves through responsible spending.

northeast Mississippi career expo
|
The First District is blessed to have a wide variety of employers who offer good paying jobs and the opportunity to advance within the company. We have to make sure our businesses and industries continue to have a ready workforce now and in the future. That is the idea that led to the Northeast Mississippi Career Expo which is held annually in Tupelo. Imagine the Possibilities is an interactive, hands-on career expo for approximately 7,000 eighth graders from seventeen northeast Mississippi counties covered by the CREATE Foundation.
Over the course of three days, students were given the opportunity to see firsthand the job opportunities available in their own backyard. Company representatives shared their personal success stories with detailed descriptions of what it takes to get a job in their field. Career pathways included aerospace, agriculture, automobile manufacturing, information technology, tourism, and marketing.

fairpark towers |
Last week, city and county officials gathered with members of the community for the launch of a construction project located in the Fairpark District in downtown Tupelo. When ground is broken, this represents confidence in our economy which is growing stronger every day in the First District, Mississippi, and across our nation. Collin Maloney, owner of Century Construction and the project developer, said the business climate in Mississippi is better which made his decision to build the four-story office complex an easy one.
We want more business owners innovate and grow which creates more jobs for Mississippians. As a member of the House Small Business Committee, we will continue to push for more polices that support business operators and continue our work to limit federal government overreach.

Desoto County veterans park |
It was a special weekend for DeSoto County veterans. They gathered with their families and friends for the dedication of the DeSoto County Veterans Park which is located near the DeSoto County Visitor Center in Southaven. During the dedication ceremony, bronze plagues recognizing all wars or conflicts were unveiled. The park also includes flags which represent each branch of the military.
The park is the first of its kind in DeSoto County. Not only does it serve as a memorial to the fallen, it is also a facility which is set up to offer the community a place to gather for food and fellowship. It is a proud moment to know generations of DeSoto County veterans will be remembered for their service and sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.
