Dear Friends,
Like many of you, I was speechless and saddened after seeing the videos, released by the Center for Medical Progress, of Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. officials flippantly describing how the organization takes cruel advantage of the unborn. By now many of you have probably seen the videos, but if you have not, I caution you that what is discussed is graphic and very upsetting. As a proud father of three, I value the sanctity of life and will fight to protect the most basic human right: the right to life.
This week, the House was focused on efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and provide new protections for infants that are born alive during induced abortions. As a husband and father of a daughter, I support easy and affordable access to women’s healthcare services. Although, I do not support the notion that abortion services are healthcare services.
ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE
|
This week, I voted in support of two pro-life bills:
H.R. 3134: Defund Planned Parenthood Act
H.R. 3504: Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act
The Defund Planned Parenthood Act would withhold federal funding to Planned Parenthood for one year while Congress investigates the possible illegal activity outlined in the videos, unless they certify they will not provide abortions during that time. The measure provides exceptions in the case of rape or incest, or an illness that would place the life of the mother in danger. While opponents of this legislation like to attack the character of supporters, this investigation is centered on whether or not Planned Parenthood is seeking to profit from the sale of fetal tissue for research, as well as promoting late-term abortions to harvest organs from more developed fetuses. While the Hyde Amendment provides certain protections against federally funded abortions, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation, receives more than $500 million a year in taxpayer money to subsidize their other services. This legislation gives Congress time to fully investigate Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices, while allowing Planned Parenthood to continue to spend federal dollars on other services, like cancer screenings and flu vaccines, if they stop performing elective abortions.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act seeks to strengthen existing federal born-alive laws to ensure abortion survivors receive proper medical care. The videos highlight concerns that Planned Parenthood abortion providers are utilizing techniques and practices to procure intact organs to be sold for research. This legislation would require that the same level of care be provided to an infant born alive during a failed abortion as any other infant born during the same gestational age. It adds criminal penalties for individuals who fail to report their knowledge of wrongdoing or negligence, while protecting mothers from prosecution. Although pro-life and pro-choice advocates do not agree on much, I think we can all agree that infants who are born alive deserve the same medical care and attention, regardless of their situation.
