ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE

Fiscal Year 2017 Appropriations

Department of Defense

The House passed H.R. 5293, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, which fully funds the military for fiscal year 2017. As our nation continues to mourn the lives lost in Orlando, we must revamp our efforts to combat radical Islamic extremists. This bill gives the Department of Defense the resources they need to fight global terrorism and support our military personnel. Here are some highlights from the bill:
  • Provides funding for key readiness programs
  • Denies the president’s proposed troop reductions
  • Ensures our military has the equipment and gear that they need to conduct successful operations
  • Supports quality of life programs
  • Fully funds a 2.1 percent pay raise for our troops
  • Provides critical support for our allies like Israel

FORT HOOD

I recently led a congressional delegation trip to visit soldiers and airmen training at Fort Hood. I was joined by Representatives Jeff Miller (R-FL) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) to watch National Guard, Army Reserve, and Active Duty Army units conduct Multi-Echelon Integrated Brigade Training (MiBT). More than 3,000 Mississippi National Guard servicemembers were participating in the training exercise. To find out more about our experience at Fort Hood, watch the clip below.

hometown news

I was honored to speak on the House floor on behalf of Major Anthony Hill and Lieutenant Michael Russell. The work they do for the Tupelo Police Department and Tupelo Police Athletic League is making a difference in the community and directly benefiting our youth. To learn more about the Tupelo Police Athletic League, please watch the clip below.
