Dear Friend,
Two years ago, House Republicans devised an ambitious plan we called "A Better Way." It was our goal to improve lives through common sense policies that would make America stronger at home and across the globe. We are proud to say that we are better off now. The economy is booming, communities are safer, and we are making solid progress rebuilding our military.
In Mississippi, tax reform increased the average take home pay per person by $853 and $1,978 per family of four. Many companies in the First District and across the state are giving their employees bonuses and raises.
We have continued to work to improve the opioid crisis that claimed the lives of 352 Mississippians and thousands of Americans in 2016. Through passage of the 2018 Consolidated Appropriations Act, we allocated more than $7 million directly to Mississippi to support prevention, treatment, and recovery services across the state.
We have taken steps to make sure the 40,936 veterans living in the First District get the care they deserve.
Active-duty military personnel across the nation are getting the largest pay raise they have had in 8 years, including those at Columbus Air Force Base. The total number of service members in Mississippi to receive the pay raise is 11,554.
We have made great progress and are committed to accomplishing even more on behalf of the American people. To monitor our progress, please visit Better.gop.
ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE
|
Last week, the House approved, with my support, H.Res. 990, a Resolution supporting the officers and personnel who carry out the important mission of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This legislation expresses support for the officers and denounces the call for abolishment of ICE. It is important that we recognize the valuable work the ICE agents do to keep us safe.

The Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, or SDVOSB, contracting program is crucial for veteran entrepreneurs and the federal agencies they work with. However, there are two similar, yet separate and conflicting verification programs at two different agencies. Both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration operate procurement programs for SDVOSBs.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business Subcommittee on Investigations, Oversight, and Regulations, it was an honor to hold a joint hearing with House Committee on Veteran's Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairman Jack Bergman (R-MI) last week. We listened to testimony from witnesses representing the Small Business Administration, Veterans Affairs, and The American Legion. The purpose of the hearing was to explore ways to streamline the verification process as we assess the SBA's readiness to take on this responsibility.
