Dear Friend,

Sixteen years ago, America was brutally attacked by terrorists who were determined to strike at the heart of our nation and weaken the spirit of our people. They failed to understand the American spirit. We will stand strong against our enemies to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. We will not forget the thousands of Americans who lost their lives and the heroes who placed their lives on the line to save others.

Any threat to American lives strengthens our resolve. In the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, Americans are once again demonstrating courage and bravery as they reach out to help others. These natural disasters remind us about the strength of the American spirit and all that we can accomplish when we come together as a nation united.

fall harvest for first district farmers

We are fortunate in the First District to have many families who want to make a living cultivating the land. Every year, they work the fields hoping for a return on their investment. Farmers are always challenged by obstacles - the weather being a major factor in good vs. average yields. As the fall harvest season gets underway, there is optimism that 2017 will be a good year overall. Ben Harlow, a Monroe County farmer, said his corn yields are expected to be between 160 and 200 bushels per acre. Matt Knight, a Webster County farmer, expects similar corn yields. He hopes this will be a good year for sweet potatoes as well.

Joey Brock, Paul Hurdle, and Heath Hurdle are fourth generation farmers from Marshall County. Heath said they have started harvesting corn, but will have to wait for fields to dry to harvest soybeans.

I am encouraged by what our farmers are saying about this year's yields. Their feedback is essential as my colleagues and I on the House Agriculture Committee continue our work on the next Farm Bill.

academy Day 2017

As a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard for 31 years, it has and continues to be an honor to fight for the freedoms we all enjoy. It is always encouraging to see young people with the same desire to serve our nation which is why I enjoy hosting Academy Day.

Academy Day 2017 will give those interested in becoming an officer in the United States Armed Forces an opportunity to learn about America's five prestigious military academies. Later this month, service academy and ROTC representatives will be on hand to answer questions at the event which will be held on the Northeast Mississippi Community College campus in Booneville. The session is open all students, parents, counselors, and educators. No RSVP is necessary.

For more details, please contact the military academy liaison at (662) 687-1525 or send an email to Melinda.whited@mail.house.gov
