November 28, 2019

Dear Friend,

On this Thanksgiving Day, family and friends are gathering for food and fellowship. In Mississippi and across our great nation, this is a special time to reflect on the many blessings that we have been afforded. Please remember all the men and women in uniform who have made this possible through their service and the many sacrifices made in the name of liberty. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and memories that last a lifetime.

Thankful for our farmers

As the 2019 harvest season comes to a close, let us all remember the farmers who devote their lives to feeding and clothing our nation and the world. Their commitment to cultivating the soil is a steadfast one during the good and the lean years.

Last week, I had the opportunity to thank farmers for all their hard work and to advocate for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), legislation that must be passed to ensure American agriculture remains the strongest and most competitive in the world. Military Transition Assistance Pathway Caucus

I am committed to easing the transition of our service members from military to civilian life. Multiple mobilizations and deployments in the National Guard have taught me that the professional and personal transition from military to civilian life seems far easier than it actually turns out to be. I have focused my efforts on the House Armed Services Committee to improve the transition process and am excited to continue to work with my colleagues through the Military Transition Assistance Pathway Caucus to achieve this goal.

veterans history project

Have you ever heard of the Library of Congress's Veterans History Project? This unique project includes an oral recording of a veteran's service history. Participants also provide photos and documentation that will be included in the Library of Congress's collection. To date, more than 450 Mississippi veterans have shared their stories. Recently, I had the honor to meet Earl Brown, a World War II veteran and a Itawamba County resident.

In 1943, Earl answered the call to serve as a U.S. Navy Sailor. During his three years on active duty, Earl spent most of his time on board a ship that was part of a flotilla of 120-foot-long boats that protected troopships. Earl spent the majority of his service in the Pacific Ocean to support battles in Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima. He remembers well the day that six U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

In 1946, Earl returned to north Mississippi, where he reunited with his family and resumed life on the farm. Over the years, he and his wife, Bertie Mae, raised six children. After more than 40 years of marriage, Earl lost his wife. He would find happiness once again with Sarah Brown. Their golden years have been filled with fun and adventure. They enjoy camping and playing music with the many friends they have met at campgrounds in Mississippi and well beyond.

I am so thankful to have met Earl, a member of the "greatest generation." I look forward to highlighting the service of more veterans through the Veterans History Project. If you would like to nominate a veteran, please contact a member of our team

small business saturday

Small business owners are the lifeblood of Mississippi's economy. These hardworking citizens employ thousands of people in every state across America. In Mississippi, they make up 99.9 percent of all businesses.

It is important that we support them. I am a proud cosponsor of House Resolution 730, Expressing support for the recognition and celebration of the vital role of small businesses, along with the efforts of the Small Business Administration to help Americans start, build, and grow businesses.
