Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking the time to read my weekly newsletter. Since September 30, the federal government has been functioning under a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR). This week the House voted to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year.

ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE

House Passes Funding Bill to Provide for National Defense

My vote in favor of the omnibus bill was about one thing- keeping this country safe. It is what I pledged to do both as a Member of the Mississippi National Guard and as your Member of Congress. The omnibus bill provides essential defense funding to combat threats from ISIS and other enemies and reforms the Visa Waiver Program to more adequately screen travelers visiting the U.S. Without this legislation, our men and women in uniform would not have the tools or certainty they need to conduct successful military operations. Due to increasing threats from radical Islamic terrorism at home and abroad, our military and supporting government agencies must be prepared and ready to address complex challenges. My primary role in Congress is to support legislation that protects our national security, and I believe this legislation strengthens our defense capabilities.

Additionally, the omnibus includes no restrictions on Second Amendment rights, an important pro-life rider that bans genetic manipulation of human embryos, lifts the outdated crude oil export ban, and reins in bureaucrats at the IRS and the EPA. I understand and share the concerns many of you have related to the spending levels and lack of certain policy provisions in the omnibus. The deal that was brokered includes new commitments to fighting terrorism and keeping Americans safe, which is better than the alternative of shutting the government down or continuing the cycle of uncertainty created by short-term spending bills.

Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes

This week the House brought certainty to taxpayers by extending certain tax provisions and making those necessary for innovation permanent. By preventing tax increases, the PATH Act will help keep jobs at home and grow our economy. The legislation reins in the IRS and includes provisions to protect taxpayers from politically motivated actions.
