September 11, 2021
Dear Friend,
Twenty years ago, our fellow Mississippians joined all Americans in mourning the loss of 2,977 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. All of us remember that day and the pain of such an unbearable loss for scores of families and for our great Nation.
Amid this tragedy, we all witnessed the courage and bravery of the emergency responders who gave their lives while saving others. In the aftermath, we watched the relentless search for survivors - a bucket of dirt and debris passing from hand to hand, one after another.
As we all watched in awe, Americans united like never before. We experienced this tragedy together, seeking comfort in each other's presence. When the American flag was raised where the twin towers once stood, our hearts swelled with pride. We would not allow cowardly acts of terror on American soil to go unpunished.
Men and women would answer the call to serve in the war on terror - just as they have since the first shot rang out at Lexington Common, launching the American Revolutionary War. In the generations to follow, Americans have fought to preserve all that we hold dear. When the battle cry took our troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, Heroes served with courage and bravery with our allies by their side. Their service and sacrifice will always be remembered.
On this, the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, let us all remember what we have learned from this tragedy. We live in the greatest Nation on Earth. Through trials and tribulations, the American patriotic spirit will always prevail.
