Dear Friend,
After three days of a needless government shutdown, Senate Democrats have finally realized that what they are doing is wrong. In September, the House passed a package of all 12 federal government funding bills, the Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act. The Senate never acted on the House passed bill. Last week, the House took action and passed a bill to extend the Children's Health Insurance Program and to keep the government open. However, Senate Democrats chose politics over policy and they irresponsibly put our military and the federal workforce at risk by shutting down the government. Shutting down the government over something that is not at all related to the government funding bill is reckless and costly. We are finally on our way to opening the government again, but I am frustrated that it got to this point.
march for life
|
As your voice in Congress, I believe it is our duty to protect the lives of the unborn. Every year, thousands of Americans who share this belief travel to Washington, D.C. to celebrate the sanctity of life during the March for Life. Dana Chisholm, a leading anti-abortion advocate in Mississippi, was among those who participated in the March for Life and related events. Dana and more than 20 others in her group came to express support for the unborn. "I believe this trip will serve as an educational experience for our young people," Dana said. "It is my hope they will become more involved in the fight to stop abortion in our lifetime."

Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act
Last week, the House passed, with my support, H.R. 4712, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Children who survive an attempted abortion deserve the appropriate medical care. This legislation requires that the appropriate medical attention be given to any child that survives an attempted abortion, and creates penalties for doctors who fail to provide the appropriate medical care. Mothers would not be held criminally responsible.

tax cuts and jobs act
|
Lee Clark is the owner of the Traceway Restaurant in Mathiston. Lee and his son, Robbie, are excited about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and what it will mean for the family business and their 45 employees.
The legislation will reduce the tax rate on their hard-earned business income. Additionally, tax reform protects the ability of small businesses to write off the interest on loans that help main street entrepreneurs start or expand a business, hire workers, and increase paychecks.
"The restaurant has been in our family for decades," Robbie said. "There will come a day when I take it over and when the time comes, tax reform will help us to continue doing what we do best - providing jobs and serving a good meal to our customers."
