Dear Friend,

On Friday, I was pleased to introduce legislation to name the United States Post Office located at 215 1st Avenue, Amory, Mississippi, in honor of Retired Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Lawrence E. "Rabbit" Kennedy. He proudly served America in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. CSM Kennedy was awarded four Legions of Merit, four Bronze Stars, and five Army Commendations.

Ira Kennedy, one of CSM Kennedy's four brothers, was excited to learn about this legislation. "Rabbit and my brother, David, served in World War II," Ira said. "Rabbit came home a celebrity! It is a great honor for Congressman Kelly to do this for our family. If Rabbit was still with us, he would be deeply touched."

exceptional family member program

If our Service Members are deployed or away for training, they may not be fully effective if they must worry about what is going on back home. They need to have peace of mind that their family is being taken care of so they can focus on the mission at hand. Earlier this month, the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel held a hearing to address the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). The program is designed to assist military families with spouses or children that have specialized needs or educational assistance requirements. Below is an excerpt from the hearing.

Chairwoman Jackie Speier and I have conducted a review of this program, meeting with a number of spouses and Service Members who say the EFMP has failed them time and time again. The purpose of the hearing was to listen to testimony from parents who have struggled with this program and to question Department of Defense (DOD) representatives and other government officials who are responsible for carrying out the program's mandate.

academy day

Aberdeen Public School District's Senior Air Force JROTC Instructor Allen Williams is eager to encourage his students to consider a career in the U.S. Military. Allen brought a large group of young people to my annual Academy Day in August.

I had the pleasure of welcoming him to our DC office this week. Allen is a remarkable person and standout leader for Aberdeen Public Schools. I look forward to seeing him at Academy Day 2020. To learn more about attending one of America's Service Academies, please click on the link
