Dear Friends,
Thank you for taking the time to read my weekly newsletter. This week was a historic one in the House of Representatives. We elected a new Speaker of the House and voted on a two year budget bill.
ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE

Speaker Update
On Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin was elected as the 54th Speaker of the House. Over the past five weeks, I participated in numerous meetings with my colleagues as we worked together to elect a new Speaker of the House. I voted for Rep. Paul Ryan because of his commitment to a more open process that allows for greater involvement from all members.
I have heard from many of you that oppose Rep. Ryan because of fears surrounding comprehensive immigration reform. Prior to my vote, Rep. Ryan vowed not to bring comprehensive immigration reform language to the House floor under President Obama. He has also made commitments not to bring any immigration bill to the floor unless it is supported by a majority of Republicans, ending concerns that immigration reform could be passed by Democrats and a handful of Republicans. House Republicans have a messaging problem, and I believe that newly elected Speaker Ryan will be able to effect real change that will resonate with a majority of the American people.
Budget Deal of 2015
After careful consideration of the numerous aspects of this bill, I could not vote to support it. While there are positive components, I feel that in its entirety it is not a good bill. Although I could not support the overall bill, it passed the House by a 266-167 vote. Now it is time to continue to move forward. As this process continues, I look forward to working on an omnibus package that scales back burdensome regulations, provides for a strong national defense, and protects our interests in Mississippi.
