May 27, 2021Dear Friend,As your Representative, it is an honor to be able to provide a wide range of services through our offices in the First Congressional District as well as Washington, D.C. Recently, I had the honor to present military medals to the family of late World II Veteran Walter Gann. We gathered with his family, friends, and members of the community at the George Robert Mitchell VFW Post 4877 in Booneville to honor his courage and bravery in combat and as a Prisoner of War (POW).In 1941, the 18-year-old Calhoun City resident was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces. Five months later, Mr. Gann and his comrades were fiercely attacked by the Imperial Japanese Army while defending the Bataan Peninsula. After months of battle, their supplies were wiped out, forcing them to surrender. On March 8, 1942, Mr. Gann was among approximately 76,000 American and Filipino troops forced to walk some 65 miles without adequate food, water, or shelter from the intense heat. Thousands died during the journey or were executed by their captors. The soldiers who survived the experience endured torture and starvation in POW camps. Mr. Gann was a POW for 3.5 years - working long and exhausting hours in coal mines. He managed to survive and eventually settled in Booneville, marrying Juanita Goddard in 1949. In January, Debbie Stolz, Mr. Gann's daughter, contacted the Tupelo District Office in hopes of acquiring medals that her father had earned and deserved but never received. We obtained the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in active ground combat, the Prisoner of War Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Gann's service will always be remembered.image widget

Dear Friend,

As your Representative, it is an honor to be able to provide a wide range of services through our offices in the First Congressional District as well as Washington, D.C. Recently, I had the honor to present military medals to the family of late World II Veteran Walter Gann. We gathered with his family, friends, and members of the community at the George Robert Mitchell VFW Post 4877 in Booneville to honor his courage and bravery in combat and as a Prisoner of War (POW).

In 1941, the 18-year-old Calhoun City resident was inducted into the U.S.

Mr. Gann's service will always be remembered.

Healthcare For Our Troops Act

This week, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) and I introduced the Healthcare for our Troops Act. The bipartisan bill would provide access to no-fee healthcare to over 800,000 members of the Guard and Reserve. From being deployed nonstop, protecting our Nation's capital, and handling pandemic relief efforts, we witnessed unprecedented use of our military. Current bureaucratic policies prevent some of our service members from having the same healthcare benefits as their counterparts on active duty. Providing healthcare for all service members is a readiness issue that is easily fixed. Our Guardsmen and Reservists deserve to have access to preventive and routine healthcare. The Healthcare for our Troops Act ensures that no military member will have to worry about paying for medical bills. To read more about this important legislation, please click on the link.

supertalk radio interview

On Monday, May 31, Americans will recognize Memorial Day and all the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms. Across the First District and throughout the nation, flags will be placed on graves, and wreaths will be dedicated at memorials. While we remember those who gave all, let us also remember their families. Their quiet sacrifices need to be recognized and honored. Let them know their loved one did not die in vain. We are free because of their great sacrifice. I appreciated the opportunity to be a guest on SuperTalk Mississippi to talk about the service of our men and women in uniform. Please click to watch.

Service academy appointment - Ben Armstrong

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Armstrong to the United States Military Academy at West Point. This week, Ben graduated with honors from Lewisburg High School in Olive Branch, Mississippi. He has maintained excellent grades in school while achieving great success in athletics. While in high school, Ben served as a Student Council Representative and as the Boys Swim Team Captain. Additionally, Ben collaborated with local high schools to establish swim programs. We are proud to know that Ben wishes to serve our great Nation as an officer in the U.S. Army. "When I was in middle school, our class visited Washington, D.C., and the United States Naval Academy," Ben said. "That was when I learned about Service Academies. I knew that attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point would provide the tools to be successful in life. If you would like to learn more about Service Academy nominations, please click on the link.
