ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE
|
This week the House passed historic legislation to lift the 40-year-old ban on crude oil exports. The export ban served a purpose decades ago, but as technology, time, and opportunities change, outdated policies need to be updated to reflect current realities. In 1975, when the ban was put into effect, the U.S. was suffering from gasoline shortages, surging prices, and the Arab oil embargo. Now, the U.S. is the number one producer of oil and gas in the world and our energy policies need to be updated to reflect our position as a global leader. Lifting the export ban will create jobs, increase domestic oil production, and make the U.S. more energy secure.
I voted in support of H.R. 720, which lifts the decades old ban on crude oil exports. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this legislation will reduce the federal deficit by $1.4 billion over a ten year period from increased oil and gas leases. Independent research and government analysis across the political spectrum agree that lifting the ban would put downward pressure on gasoline prices at home. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), part of the Department of Energy, released a report that illustrates lifting the ban would not negatively affect U.S. customers and would lower prices at the pump. Additionally, the U.S. should not allow countries like Russia and Iran to dominate the crude oil market. By lifting this self imposed ban, the U.S. can help stabilize global energy markets and aid our allies who heavily rely on imports from bad actors.
