Dear Friend,

ACTIONS IN THE HOUSE

Veterans + Combating Zika

MilCon-VA funding

The House approved the Appropriations Conference Report regarding the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) funding bill for fiscal year 2017 and the Zika Response and Preparedness Act. In a previous newsletter, I wrote about my support for the MilCon-VA funding bill. Supporting our servicemembers and their families is extremely important to me and this bill funds programs for our troops, military families, defense infrastructure, and veterans.

Zika

This conference agreement also provides funding to prepare for and respond to the public health threat posed by the Zika virus. The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus a global health emergency, but there is no known vaccine or commercially available diagnostic tests. This supplemental funding provides the necessary resources to protect individuals, especially expectant mothers, from the serious health concerns associated with the Zika virus.

congressional baseball game

On Thursday night, members of Congress participated in the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity. The event supports three worthy charities and allows for everyone to come together and enjoy America’s pastime.

SUPREME COURT UPDATE

Immigration

President Obama's executive action on immigration has been stopped by the courts. The Supreme Court’s 4-4 decision in United States v. Texas strikes the final blow to the president’s unilateral plan to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants. It is this simple: the president, regardless of political party, does not have the authority to write laws.
